ANALYSIS + HIGHLIGHTS: CanWNT get past Costa Rica as Sheridan, Viens shine bright
The Canadian women's national team will move on to the semi-finals of the 2024 Concacaf W Gold Cup after defeating Costa Rica 1-0 over 120 minutes in their quarter-final rematch.
Having just defeated Costa Rica 3-0 earlier in the week during the group stage, Bev Priestman's team went into this quarter-finals match-up feeling plenty of confidence; but this second go proved trickier than the first, compounded by the early exit of another no. 9 in Jordyn Huitema, and the subsequent frustrations in front of goal that followed.
In fact, the Canadians nearly found themselves on the verge of defeat when Costa Rica sprung a late attack that yielded a point-blank shot on goal, but for the outstretched limbs of Kailen Sheridan, who came up with a huge save to deny the effort in the 93rd minute and keep the game at 0-0 through regular time.
It would keep Canada in the match through to extra time, where their much-coveted goal finally arrived, as Evelyne Viens got on the end of a Jessie Fleming free kick to nod her effort backward off her head and into the net in the 104th minute.
That goal proved the difference between the two teams, though it was Sheridan's save that earned more of the credit for the result; regardless, Canada move on to the semi-finals, to take on one of the U.S. women's national team or Colombia.
