ANALYSIS + HIGHLIGHTS: CanMNT held to goalless Gold Cup draw vs. Guatemala
The Canadian men's national team succumbed to another poor result in the 2023 Concacaf Gold Cup, drawing 0-0 against Guatemala to put themselves in a precarious qualifying position against Cuba to round out the group stage.
The goalless draw came under the heatlamp of Houston, Texas, but with Guatemala out-shooting Canada 11 to 9, John Herdman now needs to find some potency up top against Cuba, where only a win could see Canada advance to the knockouts.
"It was a tough match," Canada midfielder Jonathan Osorio said after the match. "A tough environment. We were basically playing away. I can't even think, it's so loud. It was a tough match under tough conditions but the team fought really well."
He added: "It's still a very new team. You can see in the first two games, there are a lot of new experiences for a lot of new players. Going into the last game, we're going to come together and get it done."
"This is Concacaf – you're in Houston but it feels like you're in the centre of Guatemala," Herdman said after the match. "You have to take your hat off for Guatemala, they were brilliant tonight. But I thought we put a shift in; we were tight, energetic and had some good moments to win the match. So it's all to play for."
