ANALYSIS + HIGHLIGHTS: USWNT defeat CanWNT in 2024 SheBelieves Cup final penalty shootout
The Canadian women's national team finished runners-up in the 2024 SheBelieves Cup after keeping the U.S. women's national team to a 2-2 draw over 90 minutes but ultimately tasting defeat in the penalty shooutout immediately following.
An opening goal by Adriana Leon capitalizing on a mis-play by the U.S. backline saw the Canadians head into half-time with a 1-0 lead and beaming with confidence. But Sophia Smith kicked off the second 45 with a quick equalizer, bringing the game back level. Smith would add a second to give the home crowd renewed belief in a result, but Leon would come up big once again with five minutes of regulation time remaining, scoring from the penalty spot to bring the match to 2-2.
That score would hold through added time, despite Kadeisha Buchanan and Lindsey Horan trading jump-off-your-seat efforts for either side, but the referee's whistle signaled a draw by the end, and off to penalties the two rivals would go.
But, penalties can be cruel just as they can be kind, and for Canada, today's result did not go their way, with the U.S. winning their sixth consecutive SheBelieves Cup by defeating their rivals from the spot over seven rounds.
