HIGHLIGHTS: York United vs. Valour FC (May 10, 2024) | Presented by tonybet
York United came from behind to claim victory in the Canadian Premier League’s 500th match, defeating Valour FC 3-1.
Dante Campbell scored the opener for the visitors, before a second-half flurry saw goals from Noah Abatneh, Brian Wright and Mo Babouli to turn the match on its head.
York United had a great chance to open the scoring inside the first 10 minutes. Some lovely quick passing around the box ended up with Josué Martínez playing a low cross that fell to the feet of Babouli, but he sent it wide.
The visitors responded quickly, however, as Abdul Binate won a free kick just outside the York box. Themi Antonoglou went for a goal from the ensuing wide opportunity, forcing a good save out of Thomas Vincensini.
On the ensuing corner kick, they opened the scoring, as Jordan Faria’s cross found the head of Valour captain Campbell, who headed home. It was Campbell’s second goal for the Winnipeg club, both of which have come against York United.
The visitors dominated in possession thereafter, looking to press their advantage in the match against a York side who looked a little bit shocked to have again given up an opening goal at home.
York eventually grew back into the game however, and around the half-hour mark, Brian Wright got in behind twice, forcing good stops from Darlington Murasiranwa in the Valour net.
They came incredibly close to equalizing on a deflected Austin Ricci cross in the 33rd minute, but Campbell played hero again as he cleared the ball off of the line. The Nine Stripes did put the ball in the back of the net just before the half on a corner kick themselves, but it was ruled as a foul. The score remained 1-0 at half-time.
Valour came out of the gates quickly again in the second half, with a pair of early chances for Jordan Swibel.
York, however, fought through the momentum, and in the 68th minute earned a corner kick from which they finally found their breakthrough. Babouli’s ball into the box deflected off Noah Abatneh and past Murasiranwa for the young central defender’s first Canadian Premier League goal.
Just six minutes late, the Nine Stripes took the lead. Wright intercepted a short back pass from Haris Chantzopoulos into the box and rounded Darlington Murasiranwa before tapping home his third of the season.
York capped off a clinical second half in stoppage time, as substitute Kadin Martin-Pereux broke in behind before squaring to Babouli who smashed home a third for the hosts.
Valour remain winless through five matches to start the season, all of which have been played on the road. York meanwhile, picked up their second home victory of the season through three matches at home, and are already halfway to their total of four wins at home last season.
