Kansas City Current re-sign captain, CanWNT star Desiree Scott
The Kansas City Current announced Tuesday the club has re-signed captain Desiree Scott for the 2023 NWSL season, bringing the Canadian international back for her third season at the club – and her seventh in the league.
"I am extremely excited to be back in Kansas City and for another opportunity to bring a championship home," Scott said in a club-issued statement. "We now have playoff and championship experience but even more importantly, the belief that we belong on those big stages. I know as a group we learned a lot last season and the motivation is definitely there to make this 2023 season another one to remember. [I'm] looking forward to an exciting year with this incredible group."

Scott, 35, first joined KC in 2013 and also has NWSL experience with the now-defunct Utah Royals, with a spell at Notts County in-between. Since joining KC, Scott has amassed 124 matches in NWSL, and was named captain of the Current in 2022. That season, Scott led an incredible turnaround at the club, who had finished last place the season prior. Scott helped propel the KC Current to a 13-match unbeaten streak lasting 113 days, which yielded a playoff berth in 2022 – and, ultimately, a 2-0 loss to the Portland Thorns in the 2022 NWSL final.
The Winnipeg native also boasts an astounding 185 caps for the CanWNT, to go alongside her bronze medal-winning efforts at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics, where she dominated in midfield. She was also a part of Canada's gold medal-winning squad for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, while featuring in three consecutive FIFA Women's World Cups in 2011, 2015, and 2019, too.
